The spotlights are ready for the best in community theater in Montgomery County.

The Montie Awards and Lifetime Achievement Awards will take place Saturday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m., now in its seventh year. Tickets for the ceremony are $15 and available online at the Crighton Theater website.

'We spend all year volunteering our time to recognize the men and women who have dedicated themselves to the theater arts in downtown Conroe,' Co-Executive Producer Stephen Green said. 'They don't get paid. They do it for no reason other than sheer pleasure of putting on a spectacular show for theater patrons.

'This is our way of patting them on the back and giving them a night to fellowship with their fellow theater community members.'

The ceremony will take place at the Crighton Theater for the fourth year in a row after being moved from The Owen Theater due to size constraints. Every year more than 350 people attend The Monties, which is designed to be in the same vein as The Tony Awards for Broadway theater. They are for shows put on by Stage-Right Productions at the Crighton and The Players Theater Company at The Owen.

The show is not just for members of the theater community. It is open to any and all that want to witness what these theaters spend all year working on.

'The thing is, The Monties serves two purposes: One is to let the people who put on these massive and magnificent shows have a night to be entertained themselves,' Co-Executive Producer Jo Champion said. 'The second is to expose that work to the wider community and bring in more people to the theater. If you're someone interested in being a part of the theater, or even just seeing what the shows are like, going to the Monties is like a taste test of the best Conroe has.'

The awards show includes performances from each of the musicals that took place this year. It will also include an after party in Founders Plaza next to the Owen Theater.

The Monties will give out 25 awards including everything from Best Set Design to Best Lead Actor in a Musical to Best Show of the Year.

Last year, 'Mary Poppins' was named the Best Show of the Year and Cara Woodard won Best Actor or Actress in a Comedy, Drama or Musical for her role as Maria in 'West Side Story' at The Owen.

This also includes a special Montie Award for Lifetime Achievement to a recipient whose contribution to the fine arts over the years cannot be overlooked. Last year's recipient was Tina Cafeo, who also won the award for Best Director/Artistic Achievement for 'Mary Poppins.'

The bronze award statues, themselves, retail at $900, and are designed by Conroe sculptor and Monties founder Craig Campobella. The Monties are underwritten by generous sponsors in the area.
