THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital recently hosted the hospital’s first remembrance service for those who have experienced a profound loss.

The service, held on Sunday, July 8 in the hospital’s Rose Chapel, was a special time for family and friends to come back to the hospital and honor the memories of loved ones who passed away within the last year.

“As a faith-based hospital, this service of remembrance is representative of our values in caring for all of our patients and their families,” said Debbie Sukin, CEO of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. “It was truly moving to see this diverse group from various faith traditions come together to honor their loved one and celebrate their life.”

At Houston Methodist The Woodlands, chaplains are a part of the health care team. While accommodating the spiritual needs of their patients, they are also there to serve as a resource to support, guide and encourage patients’ family and friends.

“We have this remembrance service as a reminder to let our patients’ family and friends know that we have not forgotten their loved ones,” said Deborah Johns, Houston Methodist The Woodlands director of spiritual care. “I am touched that our service was so meaningful to these families.”

After the ceremony, guests had the opportunity to visit with hospital staff and share memories with others that have been affected by loss. Bonded together by difficult circumstances, there was a bittersweet atmosphere filled with tears and laughter.

“Offering comfort and support is very important to us at Houston Methodist The Woodlands. Whether it is providing a listening ear, bringing a cup of coffee after a long day, or in this case, creating an opportunity for a celebration of life, Houston Methodist The Woodlands continues to demonstrate an unparalleled level of compassion and care to our patients, families, friends and the community,” added Johns.
