MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Voters will go to the polls on Nov. 6 to determine who will hold three positions on the Lone Star College nine-member Board of Trustees.

Up for election are Districts 1, 2 and 8. The trustee terms are for six years and board members serve as volunteers without pay. Deadline to file for a seat was Aug. 20.

The candidates (listed in the order they will appear on the ballot) are:

District 1

  • Michael (Mike) Stoma
  • George Edwards, Jr.

District 2

  • Ernestine M. Pierce
  • Matthew Wheeler

District 8

  • Mike Sullivan
  • G. Puente

Major responsibilities of the LSC Board include: appointing the chancellor; setting board and system policies; contracting system assets; ratifying employment contracts; approving various system business activities; establishing tax rates; setting budgets; and monitoring and reviewing the performance of the system.

“It is encouraging to see so much interest by the public in Lone Star College and in these board positions,” said Stephen C. Head. Ph.D., LSC chancellor.

The six-year terms of board members are staggered in order to consistently have board members with experience in place.

Qualifications to serve as a LSC board member include: Must be a United States citizen; 18 years of age; a registered voter; has not been finally convicted of a felony from which he/she has not been pardoned or otherwise released from resulting disabilities; has not been finally determined mentally incapacitated; and has lived in the State of Texas for the last 12 months and within the Lone Star College System for the last six months in the District for which the candidate is filing for a position, e.g., a candidate for District 1 must have lived in the State of Texas for the last 12 months and within Lone Star College System District 1 for the last six months.
