Montgomery County Sheriff Livestock Unit seizes Malnourished Horses

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- On July 23, 2018, deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Livestock Unit responded to a report of possible Cruelty to Livestock at a residence located in the 7700 block of Bryan Lane in Montgomery. A Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy initially observed the horses and reported the animals’ condition to the Livestock Unit. Deputies with the Livestock Unit contacted the owners and observed three horses to be in an advanced state of malnourishment. As is standard procedure, the deputies evaluated the horses and the owner was left with a notice of recommendations regarding animal care. The owners initially complied with the notice and had the horses seen by a veterinarian who gave strict feeding and care instructions. On October 9, 2018, deputies with the Livestock Unit returned to the residence for follow-up. When deputies arrived, it was immediately apparent the owners had stopped complying with veterinarian recommendations as all three horses showed obvious decline in their body condition. Deputies determined the owners had been given sufficient opportunity and time to provide proper care for the horses but failed to do so. The deputies completed a seizure warrant, which was signed by Judge Masden. Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was contacted and a total of five horses were seized and placed into SPCA care. All five horses were transported to the SPCA facility to be evaluated and cared for by staff veterinarians until an outcome of the seizure hearing.
