THE WOODLANDS, Tx -- The Woodlands chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc, receives a 5 Stars of Excellence Distinction by the national organization as it also celebrates 30 years of service in the community. With the theme “10 Years Charting, 10 Years Better, and 10 Years Stronger”, current, former, and charter members collectively honor all of the contributions the chapter has made locally and nationally.

The wonderful Woodlands Chapter came to be almost 35 years ago. In 1986, The Woodlands area interest group was granted a provisional charter with Jack and Jill of America, Inc., under the sponsorship and guidance of the North Houston Suburban Chapter. The North Houston Suburban Chapter’s assistance was priceless as its members mentored and supported the young Woodlands chapter throughout its pivotal and crucial first years. After two years of spending countless hours of hard work and preparation, the National organization voted to fully establish and charter The Woodlands Chapter in July 1988 at The Wyndham Hotel in Houston, Texas. This historical event marked the beginning of an outstanding legacy in The Woodlands, Texas.

Upon the granting of the charter to The Woodlands group, the first officers were elected as follows: President, Myrna Irons; 1st Vice President, Michelle Stokes; 2nd Vice President, Nancy Dunson; Financial Secretary, Carolyn Swain;

Recording and Corresponding Secretary, Sheridan Vickers; Treasurer, Franca Sheehy; Sergeant-at-Arms, Hallie Dorsey; Chaplain, Jane Peter son; Editor/Historian, Janice Peyton; Program Directors, Pat Holmes and Paulette Anderson; and Parliamentarian, Doris Franklin.

For the first year in Jack and Jill of America, Inc., The Woodlands chapter continued to work tirelessly to promote family, relationships, black history, community service, legislative advocacy, and philanthropic giving. These charter mothers, families, and children worked hard early in their tenure to bring new systematic programming and life experiences that have served to enrich the lives of all children who have matriculated through The Woodlands chapter.

Chapter President, Dr. LaQuita Carter states

“…Since our chartering in 1988 we have been a pillar in The Woodlands community offering nothing short of excellence. In this year as we celebrate a milestone for our impact in our families and those whom we serve we should stand proud. We should celebrate the value we add, celebrate the challenges we have overcome, celebrate the opportunities we created to shine, and celebrate the platform we have used to uplift children. We also must push ourselves to Do More as we live out the mission and vision of our organization….”

To Do More is the goal of the chapter as it continues to thrive, holding a membership of 49 active mothers, 94 children, 13 active Associates and an active father’s committee. In fact, local Father Kevin Jackson was recently named national chair of the Jack and Jill of America, Inc Father’s Auxiliary. Building upon our rich past, The Woodlands chapter is even more committed to providing quality programming to our children and helping create a better world for ALL children in our community.
