THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The arrival of summer opens up educational opportunities for young and old. Camps and classes on a variety of topics will keep boredom at bay. These events can quickly drain the checkbook, so we’ve included free events in the mix. Take a few moments to look through all the events happening in the community on the Events Calendar.

Preserving traditional dance and educating about authentic Polynesian culture, Houston Hula Academy offers classes right here two days a week. The one-hour class on Tuesday, June 4, at the Rayford Rd. dance studio begins at 7 p.m. and is $15. Check out the video demonstration and enroll online here.

Global Wellness Day, said to have first been celebrated in 2012 in Turkey, has now been accepted worldwide. The second Saturday of June is dedicated to living well and a focus on freeing ourselves from the stress of everyday city life and bad habits. Saturday, June 8, The Westin at The Woodlands encourages you to join them in a Global Wellness Day event. Take part in the complimentary low-impact, high-energy Aqua Aerobics class at 9 a.m. in the beautiful infinity pool. This class accommodates all ages and fitness levels. Plan to stay after the class to enjoy complimentary samples of food and juice items from the new Eat Well menu. Water and towels will be provided. Please allow additional time for parking.

Few skills appeal to such a broad range of people as photography does. The Glade Arts Foundation scheduled a Contemplative Photography full-day workshop for both novice and experienced photographers. The class cost is $125 for eight hours of instruction, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Glade Arts Foundation on Saturday, June 8. The workshop includes an introduction to the topic with instructions, time for taking photographs as a group, and image reviews by the teacher in the group setting. Students will need a digital camera for the workshop and a camera card. Register for the opportunity to learn new skills or expand your abilities.

This list would not be complete without a strong recommendation to engage in Wine and Food Week festivities. There are 11 different events on the Wine and Food Week calendar beginning Tuesday, June 4 through Saturday, June 8. Food and wine enthusiasts from across the nation will convene in The Woodlands to taste and explore all that is planned during this week of culinary extravagance. Men won’t want to miss “It’s a Guy Thing,” a time to sip big, bold wines and craft beers while playing poker, enjoying a cigar and live music, and getting a shoe shine. A Wine Walk in the newly renovated and beautiful setting of Market Street will offer live music as guests taste wines from around the world. Tacos take the stage at the “Sips, Suds, and Tacos” event on Friday. A highlight of the week will be “The Wine Rendezvous Grand Tasting and Chef Showcase” on Saturday, June 8.
