Rodeo Awards Texas 4-H Members with $1.4 Million in Scholarships

HOUSTON, TX - Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials presented 70 students from the Texas 4-H program with $1.4 million in scholarships on June 13 during the 4-H Roundup in College Station, Texas.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is proud to recognize the achievements of these outstanding Texas students,” said Joel Cowley, Rodeo president and CEO. “Because the Texas 4-H program shares the Rodeo’s focus of developing youth and promoting agriculture through hands-on experience, it is an honor to help these dedicated scholars and future leaders continue their education.”

Of the 70 students receiving Texas 4-H scholarships, 59% are female and 41% are male. These scholars represent 47 different counties from across the state and will attend 21 different Texas colleges and universities. The top two schools these students will attend are Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University, and of the 50 selected majors, the top two fields of study chosen are Animal Science and Mechanical Engineering.

Each Texas 4-H scholarship recipient will receive $20,000 toward a four-year undergraduate degree for a total commitment of $1.4 million. Students were selected by Texas 4-H officials based on the students’ involvement with the program, academic achievements and financial need.

These scholarships represent a portion of the Rodeo’s annual commitment to youth and education. In 2019, more than $27 million will be given to Texas students via scholarships, junior show exhibitors, educational program grants and graduate assistantships.
