HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo awarded seven Houston-area community colleges and technical institutions with $300,000 in Vocational Scholarships for the 2019–2020 academic year.

Each technical school that receives funding through the Vocational Scholarship Funding program is responsible for the selection of recipients and disbursement of scholarship funds. This year’s technical school recipients include Houston Community College, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lee College, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College, Texas State Technical College and Wharton County Junior College.

“As the demand for skilled labor continues to grow, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is committed to supporting students who are intent on developing their technical skills,” said Joel Cowley, president and CEO of the Rodeo. “The Rodeo’s Vocational Scholarships can be a game changer for students interested in exploring a nontraditional postsecondary education, and we are proud to work alongside our technical school partners as they strive to offer high-quality vocational education and training programs that will help prepare these students for a bright future.”

Since the program’s inception in 2015, the Rodeo has awarded 268 scholarships totaling $1,101,000. The selected technical schools offer a variety of vocational programs, such as Commercial Air Conditioning, Industrial Maintenance, Maritime Transportation and Nuclear Technology, among others.

Vocational Scholarships represent a portion of the Rodeo’s annual commitment to Texas youth and education. In 2019, the Rodeo committed more than $27.17 million to scholarships, junior show exhibitor support, educational program grants and graduate assistantships.
