MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- United Way of Greater Houston hosted their annual Women Who Rock Graduation and Signing Day Celebration this month to recognize the Montgomery County women who are committed to continuing their education beyond high school. Each year, the Women Who Rock luncheon raises funds to benefit the Young Mother’s Child Care Scholarship to help young mothers pursue post-secondary education.

Graduation ceremony also served as introduction of new scholarship recipients

“We know that education is key to creating a life we all want for our families. For too many women in the region, the cost of child care is a burden that prevents them from pursuing higher education,” said Melissa Young, chair of the United Way of Greater Houston Montgomery County Regional Council. “Thanks to generosity of those who support Women Who Rock, United Way is able to help young women along their education journeys and build stronger futures for themselves and their children.”

Four recipients of the Young Mother’s Child Care Scholarship were recognized for their recent graduations from area universities while fifteen young mothers signed their letter of intent, formalizing the commitment they have made to participate in the scholarship program. In addition to child care funding, the scholarship recipients receive financial coaching through a partnership with United Way THRIVE and The Women’s Resource Center to better identify opportunities to remain financially stable.

The next round of Young Mother’s Child Care Scholarships will be awarded in May 2020. Those interested in applying should contact Mary Tschantz at mtschantz@unitedwayhouston.org for additional information on requirements and deadlines.

Support for the Young Mother’s Childcare Scholarship comes from Anadarko, Entergy, STRIKE, The Huntsman Corporation and ExxonMobil.
