MONTGOMERY, TEXAS -- On Saturday night at approximately 11:35 p.m., the Southern Empress, a large paddle boat that operates on Lake Conroe ran aground near Bird Island in Lake Conroe. Reports indicate that there were several other boats operating in the area and that while trying to avoid these vessels, the Southern Empress was pushed by strong winds onto a sand bar near Bird Island.

There were no reported injuries, and local authorities report that all 83 passengers and crew were safely brought to shore. In the attempt to free the Southern Empress on Sunday afternoon, a tug boat was capsized. The crew of the towing vessel was unharmed.

Both of these incidents are currently being attributed to the San Jacinto River Authority’s recent release of water from the lake as a precautionary measure in preparation for hurricane season. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
