San Jacinto River Authority: Information for SJRA Customers and Stakeholders Regarding the Sunset Review Process

THE WOODLANDS, TX - As a customer or stakeholder of the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA), you may be contacted by an employee of the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission to provide comments regarding your own evaluation of SJRA and its operations.

WHAT IS THE TEXAS SUNSET ADVISORY COMMISSION?
The Sunset Advisory Commission is an agency established by the Texas Legislature that evaluates state programs and agencies to ensure they are meeting their mission. It is governed by a 12-member board made up of five senators, five representatives, and two members of the public appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House. The Commission may make recommendations to the legislature regarding any need for performance or operational improvements.

WHAT IS A SUNSET REVIEW?
The Sunset Advisory Commission conducts a Sunset Review of an agency every 12 years. The Review is an assessment of the effectiveness and performance of a program or agency in accomplishing its legislatively-mandated mission. During the Sunset Review process, the Commission reviews the agency’s Self-Evaluation Report (SER), considers feedback from stakeholders and the public, hears public testimony, compiles a staff report, and decides on any changes to bring to the full legislature during the next legislative session.

SELF-EVALUATION REPORT
Each agency that undergoes a Sunset Review starts the process by developing a Self-Evaluation Report (SER) that is submitted to the Commission. The SER is the agency’s opportunity to describe its organization and identify any problems, opportunities, or issues it feels should be considered during the review. Each agency under review includes within its SER a list of stakeholders and interested parties. During the review process, Sunset Commission staff may contact those stakeholders to gather input regarding SJRA’s operations.
