HOUSTON, TX - The show must go on! Thankfully, artists continue to create, and Archway Gallery found a way to pivot in this COVID19 world to host its 12th Annual Juried Exhibition, benefiting Houston Junior Forum. 243 pieces of art were submitted for the Juried Exhibition. Juror Wayne Gilbert selected 39 pieces, which were announced online during a Facebook Live Watch Party, Sunday evening July 5. First, Second and Third place winners receive a cash prize. Five Honorable Mentions were also announced, and the entire exhibition is on display in the gallery (open for appointment only) and online at archwaygallery.com.

Selected juror, Wayne Gilbert, has worked with many artists during his illustrious career spanning 40 years. Gilbert explained of his selection process, “I give everyone who creates a piece of art equal credit. The submitted works were varied enough. Conceptualism, realism, abstract, and sculptures—all of the different things I wanted.” Continuing, he said, “I look for pieces with discipline—those that took a long time to create.” Of the 39 pieces selected, Gilbert chose a collection of both 2D and 3D works. His advice for artists? “When you stop loving it, stop making it. When things are dark in life, art makes it light up a little,” Gilbert concluded.

Liz Conces Spencer, Co-Chair of the show with fellow artist, Becky Soria, said that being a Co-Chair for this show is a highlight of the year. “We love this event as it unites Houston’s creative community and benefits a very worthwhile area charity. We are especially grateful to everyone involved this year as the pandemic has presented such unique challenges for hanging this show.” Spencer added, “Congratulations to all of the artists whose work was selected and a special thanks to Juror, Wayne Gilbert and video director, John Slaby.”

The First, Second and Third place winners included:

First Place was awarded to Ziping Wang, for her oil painting Staring at Night Sky. Wang receives a $500 cash award with guest artist privileges for one month at Archway Gallery.

Second Place was awarded to Cecilia Campos for her acrylic on canvas entitled, Womb and, Third Place was awarded to Jo Zider for her Etched Glass and Mixed Media piece, Where I Am.

Honorable Mentions included: Laura Spector, oil painting, Artist in his Studio; Margaret Howell, photography, Hall of Mirrors, Versailles; Gary Watson, photography, Double Anxiety; Richard Stewart, sculpture, Initiator; and Michael Abraham, archival print, The Night She Decided to Leave.

Archway Gallery began its juried exhibition in 2009 to broaden opportunities for artists and to support local nonprofit organizations, donating 50% of the proceeds from the sales of the Juried Artwork to a community partner. This year the gallery is partnering with Houston Junior Forum, which provides charitable services for children, youth, women, and seniors in the greater Houston area. Established in 1946, HJF is open to women age 21+ who wish to “make a difference” through community service. Today’s 400 members provide services for 16 non-profit organizations.

The gallery is currently open by appointment only by emailing info@archwaygallery.com. The 12th Annual Juried Exhibition is also viewable online through July 30 along with the gallery’s #BlackLivesMatter: Time for Change exhibition, which runs through July 31.
