Houston Food Bank Re-Opening Offices for On-site SNAP Application Assistance

HOUSTON, TX -- In the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, Houston Food Bank remains committed to supporting clients to the best of its ability. As part of their mission to bring awareness to resources and to utilize food for better lives, the Community Assistance Program (CAP) will be reopening its doors at the Houston Food Bank every Monday – Thursday, 9 am – 5 pm beginning September 8, 2020.

SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities.

Households who receive SNAP can use benefits to buy foods such as:

breads and cereals
fruits and vegetables
meats, fish and poultry
dairy products
Houston Food Bank’s CAP staff can assist via various methods: in-person at the food bank offices at 535 Portwall Street; through the food bank’s online SNAP Assistance Inquiry Form; by calling the Houston Food Bank main number 832-369-9390 to schedule an appointment; or by sending an email to cap.resource@houstonfoodbank.org.

The food bank’s team of navigators will be on-site and ready to assist clients on a 45-minute, appointment-based model with the following policies in place:

Temperatures taken upon entry to the building.
Face masks are required; Houston Food Bank can provide one upon entry to the building.
6-foot social distance to be maintained.
New pens & documents for every client.
Disinfecting equipment after every client use

* No one will be allowed to enter the building if:

a. They are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms

b. Have a fever

c. Refuse to wear a face mask

To assist in the process, clients are encouraged to bring with them all necessary paperwork and information pertaining to their case. They will be assisted regardless if they have the paperwork or not as those documents can be submitted at a later date via fax, YTB.com or the YTB.com app.

Proof of physical address
Proof of income from a job such as an award letter or pay stubs
Medical costs
Dependent care expenses
Child support anyone gets or pays
Rent or mortgage costs
