HOUSTON, TX - Lone Star College-North Harris has been named a finalist for the 2020 Examples of Excelencia, a national recognition from Excelencia in Education, for its Mi Casa Es Su Casa program. The program encourages students, faculty and staff to connect, acclimate, succeed and achieve.

“Lone Star College is committed to helping all students achieve their dreams,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “We are honored to be recognized for the work done by our incredible faculty and staff.”

Examples of Excelencia accepts nominations encouraging individuals and programs to share initiatives accelerating Latino student success in higher education. This year, Excelencia received 112 program submissions from 24 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In all, 20 programs received national recognition for strategies advancing equity for Latinos.

“The goal of Mi Casa Es Su Casa is to guide students through three initiatives,” said Archie L. Blanson, Ph.D., LSC-North Harris interim president. “The first two are designed to connect students to LSC-North Harris resources and opportunities to improve academic preparedness and engagement. The third ensures students are receiving best-fit instruction based on proven methods and needs.”

Excelencia in Education will recognize four initiatives as 2020 Examples of Excelencia at the annual Celebración de Excelencia being held virtually Oct. 20.

“Identifying and advancing what works is central to Excelencia’s tactical plan to accelerate Latino student success,” said Deborah Santiago, Excelencia in Education CEO. “We look to these evidence-based practices and the leaders working directly with students and community as exemplars of what others can do to ensure our students are served well.”
