THE WOODLANDS, TX -- A few weeks ago, we were given the opportunity to write a couple of unique articles highlighting the exceptional life and business of a wonderful local candy store owner by the name of Don Baker. Mr. Baker started a family business called The Candy House, a store that he and his wife operated for over 30 years. Due to the downturn in the economy though, Don wasn't sure if his business would survive the end of November. It was a reality that many businesses faced this past year due to Covid-19 and The Candy House was looking at shutting their doors permanently.

A few media outlets covered this story and the community quickly pulled together to show the Baker's how much they appreciated their business. The Baker's were loved and respected in and around The Woodlands. Don loved to talk to his customers and his customers not only loved his candy but loved Don Baker as well. To show their appreciation and in an effort to help keep his doors open, the community visited The Candy House frequently, they sent him notes of encouragement and they assisted him in other unique and thoughtful ways. One act of kindness that we noted during the Thanksgiving holidays was from Brad Briggs and his crew at Texas Engineered Roofing. Texas Engineered Roofing provided new flooring for Don's store to help spruce things up. We were able to talk with Don Jr and he expressed how much the store meant to his father and how much they appreciated the outreach from the community.

Don Baker passed away on Saturday, January 2 at the age of 89. It is hard to express the sadness of the community when hearing of his passing. When we wrote about Don back in November, we were approached by several people that knew him personally, some that had worked at his store and individuals that were young kids when they first knew him, who now were adults with their own kids visiting his store.

Don was a wonderful man. He was a veteran, a husband, and a father. He overcame many health issues. There have been many things said about Mr. Baker. He was loved by the community. And as much as we all loved candy, nothing he sold at his store was as sweet as the man himself, Mr. Don Baker. His legacy he leaves is a legacy of family, community, tradition, and friendship. And nothing is sweeter than that.
