THE WOODLANDS, TX - We sat down with singer and songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard to talk about his career and upcoming concert on July 9th at Dosey Doe. His music is a mixture of country, blues, folk and Americana. He has played with world-class artists including Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Jerry Jeff Walker. From his hit song in the 1970s titled “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother” Ray Wylie Hubbard started an amazing music career that has spanned several decades. A life of entertaining people from around the world, Ray is known as an amazing live performer. We asked him questions about his life and what to expect at the July 9th concert.

Earlier Years

Ray Wylie Hubbard was born in Hugo, Oklahoma and raised in Soper, Oklahoma. His family eventually moved to Texas and he attended high school at W H, Adams High School in Oak Cliff, Texas. As a sophomore student, Ray saw a singer by the name of Michael Martin Murphy perform. At the time, the school was having a talent show and a senior, who he had seen around the hall, had come out on stage to play. When Michael took the stage, he mentioned that he had written the song he was about to sing. It dawned on Ray that Michael was one of those guys you always see in parenthesis, under the title of songs. It impressed him that he wrote his own songs and that event prompted Ray to purchase his first guitar at the age of 17. It was just a cheap $13 guitar, but that first instrument helped Ray kickstart a wonderful relationship that developed between himself and music.

The Importance of Lyrics and Writing

Ray mentioned that lyrics were very important to him. It was one of the reasons he decided to pursue music. He was greatly influenced by popular folk singers of the day. Words and their meanings really appealed to him as well as writing his own songs. Another big influence was his father. His dad was an English teacher and principal. When Ray was younger, his dad would frequently read to him. His dad helped instill in him a love of literature. Ray’s dad would read stories to him like The Three Little Pigs, The Tale of Two Cities and Last of the Mohicans. That love of literature has continued to this day. Ray is an avid reader of nonfiction literature which includes many biographies. He also majored in English when he attended college. Ray is a very creative person and in addition to his skills as a singer and songwriter, he loves to draw. He has created many pen art pieces that can be purchased on his website. In the late 1960s, Ray played as part of a folk music trio called “Three Faces West” while spending summers in Red River, New Mexico. It was also in New Mexico that he wrote his hit song 'Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother” in the 1970s. This single became popular with the cover from Jerry Jeff Walker. Since his success of his first song, Ray has been signed with various labels. He has written numerous other songs and has played with everyone from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson to Ringo Starr. He is a very talented individual and that talent shines the brightest at his live performances.
