THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Cross Country Teams Finish Second and Third In Cooper Invitational. Results from the week of August 30

VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY

8/27 hosting Cooper Invitational at Burroughs Park
Girls 3rd place • Boys 2nd place

The Cooper girls’ teams finished third behind powerhouse St Agnes, and SPC-conference foe, St Johns.

“This was a great meet for our girls,” said head coach George Dohner. “We put three ahead of St Agnes’ second runner and finished only 17 points behind St Johns.” Junior Megan Day once again led Cooper with a fourth place finish and an impressive 12:28 two-mile time. Freshman Milla Signorelli and senior Amber Navarra both finished sixth and seventh place only .13 seconds apart. “We were especially happy for Amber Navarra, as has put in a lot of hard to help lead this team as a senior.” Junior Chloe Smith, senior Abby Mendenhall and freshman Darcy Wright had a good day to round out the Cooper scoring.

The boys finished in second place behind St Johns. Vishnu Swaminathan led Cooper in second place overall, becoming the fifth fastest Cooper runner to complete this two-mile course under 10 minutes at 9:59. “Vishnu is just…well just Vishnu!” said Dohner. “He is a prime example of a dedicated cross country athlete. He has a good work ethic and leads by example.” Sophomore Grey Mendenhall had his best performance of the year, finishing in eighth place. He was followed by sophomore Zac Visser and senior Drew Wilkerson in 12th and 13th place, separated by .02 seconds. Senior Morgan Davis and Elias Boles really stepped up to complete Cooper’s scoring in 29th and 30th places, respectively.

The Cooper Cross Country Teams will run their first 5k next week in the “Run The Dog Pound” at Magnolia High School, Saturday, September 11.

VARSITY FOOTBALL

9/3 vs. Lutheran South • 30-29 L
First home game

Coach Erik DeHaven: It has been said that ships are safe in the harbor, but that’s not what ships are made for. The Dragons fell to 0-2 on the year last night as they lost in overtime to Lutheran South 30-29. It was a back-and-forth game all night ending on Cooper’s failed 2-point conversion. Cooper struggled to find an offensive rhythm all night but continued to battle on both sides of the ball seeing improvements from last week in many areas. Senior Gamble Reed led the way for the defense with 10 tackles, five of those for a loss, seven quarterback pressures, two sacks and a forced fumble; he also accounted for the only Cooper receiving touchdown. Junior QB Vaughn McKeever didn’t have his best night in the air but used his legs to get 124 yards on the ground to keep the Dragons in the game. Senior Will Young played well on both sides of the ball hauling in six passes averaging 11 yards on each reception and had multiple important tackles from his corner spot on defense. This week Cooper travels to take on last years’ TAPPS 3A state finalist in Cypress Christian in the Dragons final non-conference game of the year.
