HOUSTON, TX -- During COVID, Goode Co. Restaurants started Goode Bird, a pop-up Southern fried chicken to-go concept, to help provide another comfort food option during pandemic restaurant restrictions. To support and celebrate the community that’s been with Goode Company through the decades, they committed to donate proceeds from every Goode Bird purchase to local charities.

Levi Goode, president of Goode Company, selected Kids’ Meals, Inc. as the first beneficiary, and asked their friends at Ben E. Keith Foods to partner in the donation to make the most impact. Together, the companies provided nearly 9,000 meals for food-insecure children in our community!

“At Goode Company, we are all about family – our own families, our restaurant family and our amazing customers whom we consider extended family – and kids are a big part of that,” says Goode. “To know that so many children in our community don’t have enough to eat on a consistent basis is alarming, and was the reason that we selected Kids’ Meals, Inc. to be our first beneficiary of Goode Bird proceeds.”

Ben E. Keith Foods contributed approximately 50-percent of the raw proteins, which amounted to 15 cases of turkey breasts and 12 cases of hams. Goode Company then did what they do best – smoked the meats to perfection, and then chilled and packaged the meats for delivery to Kids’ Meals where they were used to make amazing sandwiches for sack lunches for kids.

“Thanks to our dear friends at Goode Co. Restaurants and Ben E. Keith Foods, our children are enjoying delicious slow-smoked barbecue ham and turkey sandwiches this week,” says Beth Harp, CEO of Kids’ Meals, Inc. “We are thrilled that, thanks to them, we are able to provide hungry children with phenomenal Texas BBQ! These generous companies donated enough to make 6,240 ham sandwiches and 2,720 turkey sandwiches. Their care and concern for hungry children is deeply appreciated and Kids’ Meals is filled with gratitude for the special treat for our children!”

“In our 115-year history as a company, Ben E. Keith Foods has always believed in giving back to the communities where we do business,” says Jerry DuBose, general manager of the Gulf Coast Division of Ben E. Keith Foods. “With that in mind, we are very appreciative of the opportunity to help with the food donation for Kids’ Meals, Inc. There is no better investment than the investment in our children.”

In researching Kids’ Meals, Inc., Goode Co. learned that the organization needs 1.5 million lunch bags each year in order to package and deliver meals to kids. So, Goode Co. wanted to help with that as well and a call went out to all Goode Co. employees and their families for a brown bag coloring contest to make special brown bags for the kiddos. Along with the meat, Goode Co. delivered 1,000 hand-painted and -decorated bags to brighten the kids’ day.
