THE WOODLANDS, TX -- It's February 1, the official date where we celebrate National Texas Day.

February 1 is the day that we Texans celebrate - and urge non-Texans to - all things Lone Star

This official calendar holiday recognizes the Lone Star State along with its fierce record of independent people and history. The 28th state may not be the only state with a record of being a republic, but the early residents' dramatic revolution and fight for independence keep Texas history alive.

Here are some interesting tidbits about Texas that might break some of the preconceptions or cliches surrounding the Lone Star State:

• The term “Texas” is derived from the term “taysha” of Caddo language meaning “Friend.” The slogan of the state is “The friendly state.”
• Texas is the second largest state in terms of population and land area as well. Texas is larger than France is and twice as large as Germany/Japan. If Texas were an independent country, it would have been the 40th largest country in the world.
• One in seven Texans has a job related to agriculture; the economic impact of Texas-based food and fiber totals about $100 BILLION
• Texas is one of 17 states that has its own Pledge of Allegiance on top of the National Pledge
• Despite some outcries from other states when Texas passed its recent concealed carry law with claims that it would bring back the 'Old West,' it should be noted that Texas was in fact the 45th (out of 50) states to institute such a law; 44 states BEFORE Texas have allowed concealed carry.
• Texas does not have an official language; while English is the state's primary language, Spanish is a close second.
• The official state food is chili.
