HOUSTON, TX -- Deborah Gordon, Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Legal Officer for Memorial Hermann Health System, is being recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of 2022’s Top Women Leaders in Healthcare to Watch. Gordon and the other winners were featured in the Feb. 21 issue of Modern Healthcare.

“I am honored to be one of the women chosen by Modern Healthcare as part of this prestigious list of top female leaders,” Gordon said. “To be recognized in this manner, by such a respected organization, is not only a great personal achievement but also a testament to the incredible work of my team and all of my fellow female executive leaders at Memorial Hermann.”

In her role, Gordon is the executive leader of a cross-functional team of over 2000 employees and manages a budget of more than $300 million. She oversees many of the business operations of Memorial Hermann, including areas such as human resources, legal, real estate, privacy, IT security, information systems, insurance, strategy, government relations and community benefit activities.

'I am thrilled to see Deborah recognized by Modern Healthcare with this well-deserved award,' said Dr. David Callender, President and CEO of Memorial Hermann. 'Deborah fills a key role here at Memorial Hermann and is known for her outstanding leadership, foresight and unrivaled work ethic. Her efforts across the many divisions she oversees continue to be invaluable to our system, and I’m proud to have her as a member of our executive leadership team.'

As part of her role, Gordon provides executive oversight of the Memorial Hermann Community Benefit Corporation (CBC), which operates community health programs such as neighborhood health clinics, school-based health centers, community resource centers, a nurse triage line, and patient navigation. The CBC also implements programs with other healthcare providers, government agencies, business leaders and community stakeholders to increase access to health care and improve the overall health of the community. The programs under her purview within the CBC tackle different issues, including access to health care, emotional wellbeing, food as health, and exercise as medicine, but they all share a common goal: improving overall health in the communities Memorial Hermann serves.

These programs also address health inequities facing Greater Houston’s diverse communities. Memorial Hermann, with Gordon’s support and advocacy, focuses on upstream health issues by addressing social determinants of health in the community. As part of an expanded commitment announced this year, the health system has pledged an additional investment of $10 million by joining the Healthcare Anchor Network, which is built upon a belief that sustainable community health can only be achieved by meeting essential needs and addressing factors that affect social determinants of health.

As an executive sponsor for the Memorial Hermann equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) program, Gordon also contributed to the health of the workplace and workforce by launching three dedicated councils to address: Memorial Hermann’s role as an employer and promoting diversity, inclusion and equity in its workforce; Memorial Hermann’s role as a healthcare provider to provide equity in its delivery of care; and Memorial Hermann’s role as a community-owned health system to promote programs to improve the health and welfare of the community.

During Gordon’s eight-year tenure with the health system, she has consistently supported the development of a diverse workforce and an inclusive workplace. Gordon leads the gender diversity recruitment program for board and leadership positions ensuring that leaders keep a close eye on measurable progress on EDI initiatives. She is also passionate about furthering these efforts for potential and current employees across all identities. Gordon has championed other women and mentored many who have graduated to senior leadership roles, leveraging her own experience advancing as a female leader.

Modern Healthcare’s Top Women Leaders is an annual recognition that honors the top women healthcare executives who are influencing the policy and care delivery models across the country. In doing so, they are also highlighting the continued need to nurture diversity in our organizations.
