The John Cooper School Wins TTCA Private School Team Tennis Championship

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The Woodlands The John Cooper School captured the inaugural Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) Private School Team Tennis Championship held March 4-5 at College Station and Bryan.

Led by Head Coach Jill Del Rio, the Dragons defeated Houston St. John’s School 7-2 at A&M Consolidated High School and sported a perfect 4-0 record in the nine-team tournament. Earlier in the championship bracket, John Cooper took out the combined team of Houston Strake Jesuit College Preparatory (boys) and St. Agnes Academy School (girls) by a score of 7-3.

The teams were initially divided into three groups, played a round-robin schedule, and advanced the next day based on their performances.

John Cooper went 2-0 in the round-robin format, shutting out Abilene Christian Schools 13-0, and beating Fort Worth Nolan Catholic High School 11-1. St. John’s, with a 3-1 final record, started off with an 11-1 victory over San Antonio Antonian College Preparatory School. The Mavericks then beat Plano John Paul II 9-1 and edged Strake Jesuit/St. Agnes 7-6 before falling to John Cooper.

Strake Jesuit/St. Agnes placed third and Austin St. Stephen’s Episcopal School finished in fourth place. Nolan Catholic took fifth and John Paul II completed the event in sixth place. John Paul II was also awarded the Team Sportsmanship Award presented by USTA Texas in conjunction with TTCA.

Tyler All Saints Episcopal School placed seventh, Antonian was eighth, and Abilene Christian finished ninth.

The dual-match format consisted of 13 matches: two boys doubles, two girls doubles, and one mixed doubles, followed by four boys singles and four girls singles matches.

The TTCA has two more upcoming tournaments on March 11-12. The Class 3A & Under Team Tennis Championship will be held at the Annemarie Tennis Center in San Antonio, and the Northside Tennis Center in nearby Helotes. The Class 1A Team Tennis Championship is set for San Antonio’s Blossom Tennis Center.
