THE WOODLANDS, TX – A grateful family and the Montgomery County Hospital District organized a reunion between a young mother and the first responders who rescued her.

The event was the first time everyone involved in the January 3 event had gotten together again. On that day around 11:30 in the morning, Chelsea Ibarra, 25-year-old mother of young son Landon, suffered a grand mal seizure while taking a shower. Suffering from the effects of the seizure, she collapsed, and in the process accidentally turned the water to full heat and broke the faucet. As a result, during the time she lay unconscious in the bathtub, she suffered third degree burns due to scalding water all along the backside of her body.

Her mother, Heather Taylor, was alerted by Landon of the incident and immediately contacted 911, where a trained EMT answered the dispatch line. Immediately, members of Conroe Fire Department 2, MCHD Medic 10, and the MCHD District 1 Chief were dispatched and soon arrived on scene. The intense burns turned a typical slip-and-fall rescue into a logistical nightmare; but the teams, working together, were able to stabilize Chelsea and get her transported to the hospital.

Since then, Chelsea has been through two surgeries with another one on the horizon. Though her ongoing recovery has been long, arduous, and painful, it was vital to her and her family that they find the men and women who rescued her.

“I had to find them,” said Heather. “I tracked down every police officer who might have known about the accident. I called everyone I knew. Finally, I was able to get hold of Misti Willingham, the public information officer for the Montgomery County Hospital District, and she was able to organize this reunion.”

At the event, the family and the rescuers reunited among recollections of the incident that would have had a much more tragic outcome without their training and presence. It was important to Chelsea, Heather, and Landon that they were able to show the members of the first response units that there was a happy ending tas a result of their efforts that day.

“They did it right; it’s an awesome group of people and they’re very special to me,” said Heather. “We wanted to recognize them and say thank you. They need to be recognized.”
