THE WOODLANDS, TX – The MLB has opening day, high school has its own form of that which is the District Opener. Monday was “opening” day for the 13-6A district and it did not disappoint. With the weather holding off until later in the night, the skies were open and the breeze was a cool 60 degrees. Some would say it was perfect weather for a ball game.

The Woodlands host Willis
The Woodlands, with its huge roster, hosted Willis at home in Scotland Yard, the old traditional field at McCullough Junior High, formerly the main high school of the Woodlands. With sun blazing down, The Woodlands was able to knock one out of the park and bring in another 3. Willis made no errors on any of the offensive plays from the Woodlands. Willis was unfortunately unable to connect on many at bats until the sixth inning. Leaving many on base, Willis was able to score one in the sixth making the score 4-1.

Grand Oaks hosts College Park
Last year’s district champs, Grand Oaks Grizzlies, hosted the College Park Cavaliers at home in their district opener on Monday. With a back and forward game, Grand Oaks shut down and K’d many at bats and College Park did the same. Conner Judge, College Park pitcher, ended the night with 15 strikeouts giving College Park the victory over Grand Oaks.

With unfortunate controversy towards the end of the game, Grand Oaks was unable to recover from a free base awarded to College Park. Due to an apparent balk, the official advanced the runners up one base, giving College Park the lead.
A balk in baseball is a rare call in which the pitcher makes an illegal motion to deceive a base runner.
Another call by the officials was an apparent obstruction at first base that was over thrown by the official and called offensive interference instead. The infield ump called for an advancement of bases for Grand Oaks, which would have put one on second but this was overturned by the home plate ump. The batter was called out and the game eventually ended. College Park held off Grand Oaks with a score of 2-1.

Oak Ridge is set to face the strong Woodlands team on Wednesday. Conroe will face the former district champs, Grand Oaks on the road.
