Pierce Pools & Outdoors Visions has the scoop on how to keep your outdoor entertainment area ready for all seasons

Keeping a particularly wary eye on the upcoming local climate change are homeowners whose properties include swimming pools and other types of outdoor entertainment areas. While it’s not quite swimsuit season yet, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the calm before the summer and take care of a few issues that will help prepare for swimming shenanigans when the time hits.

Woodlands Online reached out to one local business – and winner of the 2022 Best Swimming Pool Contractor award for the recent Woodlands Online “Best Of…” Awards – Pierce Pools & Outdoor Visions for some expert advice on how to best get your swimming pool ready throughout the spring as it eventually segues into summer. Here are some of of their handy tips:

Have your pool equipment inspected – Inspections save money by detecting any small leaks, sealant issues or equipment malfunctions. An expert will be able to identify any problems and assist with repairs. Routine maintenance and inspections are invaluable and will almost certainly save you money in the long run. Just like spending twenty dollars on a tablet screen protector can save ten times that on screen repair in case of a drop, one preventative inspection can cost only a tiny fraction of an eventual repair bill if you neglect one.

Have your filters cleaned – Filters should be cleaned 3-4 times a year. This will extend the life of your cartridges, as well as assist with better water flow. Pool filters should also be cleaned, additionally, after a party or an algae bloom. This is another shining example of how one inexpensive preventative maintenance process can save money and grief in the months to come; just like spending literally pennies on a filter for your home coffee brewing system can keep away a buildup of gunk that will take much more time, effort, and money to clean away otherwise.

Have your water professionally tested – It’s always a good idea to occasionally have your water professionally tested. Winter temperatures keep the algae and bacteria growth at a minimum, using less chemicals; however, as spring approaches, temps warm up, affecting the local ecosystem, with the result that the balance may be off and need a little more assistance than typical chemicals. By having it tested and adjusted now, you can ensure the safety of swimmers in the summer.

Dip your toe outside the water and check your pool decking for any safety hazards – Cracked, uneven concrete or pavers can cause a tripping hazard, resulting in broken toes and cracked skulls. Also, checking for any slippery surfaces will go far to give you poolside peace of mind. Enhance your decking with a non-slip product. While it’s a good idea to use a pressure washer to knock away any mildew, use low pressure so as not to damage or chip paint or create loose pebbles. And a fresh coat of paint can enhance any spray deck and help it look brand new.

Outdoor lighting – Take this pre-summer period to add tikis, solar lights, string lights and other illuminating fixtures – ambiance lighting always adds flair and helps with seeing in the dark. Tiki torches and citronella will also help keep the bugs away.

On top of these simple measures, the expert staff at Pierce encourages you to keep on hand a pool test kit. Most retail-consumer test kits last 12-24 months, depending on the manufacturer, and test strips last 24-36 months. Make sure you’re checking any expiration dates to ensure proper readings. Always store in a cool, dry location that’s away from sunlight.
