THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Instilling a love of reading has been proven critical in early childhood success and with that belief, Cypress Woodlands Junior Forum (CWJF) created the program, Baxter the Bookworm. Recently, the children at Grace England Early Childhood and Pre-K Center in Houston were treated to a reading of the book, 'Dragons Love Tacos' by Adam Rubin. CWJF beloved character, Baxter the Bookworm was on hand as the Master of Ceremonies, to the delight of the children. A CWJF volunteer read the book and a snack was enjoyed. The ensemble of costumed, energetic volunteers from CWJF performed for four different classes, reaching a total of 376 children.

This year alone, beginning Fall of 2021, the Baxter the Bookworm Program, has reached a grand total of 1,042 children/students. This does not include an online presence at the Barbara Bush Library where Fiona Flamingo's narrated version was provided to the Children's section.

Resourceful program co-chairs, Jean DesAutels & Doris Hill 'stretched' CWJF's resources and served each child for $.46 cents each. All received books in their library or classroom, reading time, character time, craft time and some snack time.

“Reading is a gift we can share with little ones and foster the love of good stories, enjoy some quality time, while sparking their imagination!” says Hill.

CWJF believes that programs like these provide the greatest good and impact in our NW Houston area communities.

Baxter the Bookworm began in 2015 and is a signature program for CWJF, meaning the club created it and supports its continuation. It is only one way that CWJF is making a big impact in our community. Their many programs include several different reading programs impacting our youth but also providing seniors with socialization through bunco, Bingo and more, in addition to volunteering at area food banks, special needs adult programs, and many more.
