THE WOODLANDS, TX – Family members, business associates, and community residents have marked with sadness the passing of one of The Woodlands’ lifelong citizens, honored war veteran and business owner Shawn Christopher Maggart. Shawn passed away last Wednesday at the age of 51 in the caring hands of Debakey VA Medical Center.

Shawn was known for his tireless work ethic, caring heart, and charitable works. His love of his daughters and giving heart led him to support and partner with Habitat for Humanity, PACN, The Montgomery Community Clinic, and many more nonprofit organizations.

A 1989 graduate of McCullough High School, Shawn married his high school sweetheart, Collat Suarez, and enlisted in the Army the following year. It was during his Boot Camp Graduation that the ceremony was halted for the Presidential address announcing the start of the Persian Gulf War – Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom. Shawn was decorated with numerous medals and awards over his next four years of honorable service.

Upon exiting the military in 1994, Shawn returned home to The Woodlands to raise his family and take over the Maggart family business, BJ Signs in The Woodlands. For the next two decades he and his wife ran this business successfully. Shawn could be seen working locally in The Woodlands, Shenandoah, and Oak Ridge. He provided services to the Cynthia Mitchell Pavilion, working with municipalities, businesses and nonprofits alike. His work is still seen to this day.

Shawn is survived by many loved ones, including his mother, Janice Maggart; his daughters, Janaye (Montero) and Jaelyn (Chum); and Shawn's pride, his grandson, 1-year-old Ezra Chum.

Shawn was preceded in death by his cherished father and the first owner of BJ Signs, Theodore (Ted) Maggart.

“We are honoring a man who always cared more than his heart should have held, yet always exceeded in loving just a little more. Shawn's sarcastic wit often had his friends laughing with tears. He is an honest soul that deserves an abundance of the greatest of all our Lord's gifts,” said Collat.

Ceremony of Life & Honor Services will be held this Saturday,September 17, at 3:00 p.m. at the Metcal Funeral Home, 1801 E. White Oak Terrace Dr. & Hwy 105 in Conroe.

In lieu of a guest sign-in book, the family requests signing in or leaving memories via Shawn's online memorial page at
