Maureen, a single mother, lives in a slum in Kenya with her 4-year-old son, Peter. She is gaining job experience at Badala and is now able to pay her son’s school fees. Maureen is one of the artisans who hand-dipped these Kuni coasters in beautiful gold paint. Badala was founded by a passionate high school senior, Joelle, as a fundraising organization to combat world hunger. While traveling to Africa for the first time, Joelle met women who were prostituting themselves just to feed their children. Instead of asking for handouts, everyone she met was looking for opportunities. Joelle launched Badala’s jewelry and accessories line. Since then, Badala has expanded their employment programs to women and artisans across East Africa, Central America, and domestic sex trafficking survivors.
