THE WOODLANDS, TX – Recently at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Event Center, key representatives of The Woodlands Township and the Howard Hughes Corporation announced details on the upcoming silver anniversary celebrations planned for The Woodlands’ 50th birthday.

The celebrations will last six whole days all throughout The Woodlands from October 14 - 19. At a media announcement event, members of The Woodlands 50th Anniversary Committee – which includes Township board members Brad Bailey, Cindy Heiser and Linda Nelson – and Jim Carman, president of the Houston Region for Howard Hughes, took turns listing the celebratory events by day..

On Monday, October 14, a kick-off celebration will feature proclamations from state, regional and local officials, as well as a dedication of a time capsule. Tuesday, October 15 will be listed as a Day of Giving, where volunteer opportunities and ways to give back to the community will be posted on the 50th Anniversary website at TheWoodlands.com early this fall in collaboration with Interfaith of The Woodlands.

A tree dedication will occur on Wednesday, October 16, where a beautiful, 1,000-gallon hardwood tree of significance will be dedicated at Northshore Park, along with the planting of a 100-gallon tree in each residential village in partnership with the Village Associations. The next day, on Thursday, October 17, a new mural – created by a local artist who will be selected in collaboration with The Woodlands Art Council – along The Woodlands Waterway will be unveiled, signifying the importance and impact of the arts in our community.

The big news from Carman, however, was the announcement of the celebration scheduled for Friday, October 18: a concert, presented by Howard Hughes, featuring music legend Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, who will headline this free event that also features local musician Hayes Carll as the opening act at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Registration for priority access to tickets is now open at www.TheWoodlands.com, along with concert details.

The celebrations will culminate on the actual date of the 50th anniversary of The Woodlands, Saturday, October 19, with a grand public extravaganza, produced by The Woodlands Township, that will be held at Northshore Park, Hughes Landing Band Shell, and Town Green Park in The Woodlands. This free, family-friendly event will culminate with an innovative high-tech drone and fireworks show, lighting the sky above Lake Woodlands. The drone show and fireworks are presented by Woodforest National Bank and Waste Connections.

When asked about his thoughts and feeling about being involved in this silver anniversary, Carman told Woodlands Online, “I feel honored and privileged to work with so many great people at the development company – some who have worked on and in this community for more than forty years and who have made it their life’s mission to make The Woodlands the best place to live, work, play, pray, and learn in the country. I take that to heart, I take it very seriously; the entire team does,” he said. “We get the mission, we have the playbook that was written for us by George Mitchell and his team, and it’s such an honor to try and carry on that tradition and to be here in the 50th year. I’m sure it went fast for many of those team members; some of whom started here before I was born. What an honor and privilege to celebrate this with our residents.”

When asked about which of the events counted as his personal favorite, he said, “I’m an Aggie and it’s hard to not love Lyle Lovett. He’s such a unique artist, and it’s so cool that he’s very close to The Woodlands here and has agreed to come play for us, and I’m looking forward to having the whole community come out and check him out. That would be the tops for me.”
