Aside Studio to Launch with 'Viewpoints: A Workshop'
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- In effort to continue fundraising for Aside Production’s 2010 season The Aside Studio is excited to announce its inaugural workshop, Viewpoints: A Workshop, to be held on Nov. 28, from 2:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Pilates on Pinecroft.
Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation that provides a vocabulary for thinking about and acting upon movement and gesture. Originally developed in the 1970s by choreographer Mary Overlie, The Viewpoints theory was adapted for stage acting by directors Anne Bogart and Tina Landau.
Overlie's Six Viewpoints (space, story, time, emotion, movement, and shape) are a more logical way to examine movement and work better for analysis.
Viewpoints has become an ASIDE staple, as we use it for community building, exploration of emotions and movement, as well as breaking out of the typical character development and using bodies, movement, dance to find abstract and powerful ways to communicate meaning.
Viewpoints will be a major component of Aside’s upcoming Texas regional premiere of Naomi Iizuka’s ANON(YMOUS) in August 2010. Viewpoints will be a part of the audition process. It is highly recommended that anyone interested in auditioning for anon(ymous) attend this workshop.
The workshop will be run by Resident Company member, James Canfield. James Canfield is a junior at St. Louis University obtaining his Bachelor of the Arts in Theatre. Canfield was trained in viewpoints by Dawn McAndrews, the first Artistic Director for St. Louis Shakespeare Festival and the current Festival Director for the award winning VSA Arts. James worked closely with Dawn as an actor in Antigone and a dramaturg for Eurydice as well as being trained by her in Shakespeare, Greek, and Restoration movement and performance.
Canfield recently appeared as Riff-Raff in NonProphet Theatre Company's The Rocky Horror Show and will appear as Abraham in Aside Productions' upcoming Altar Boyz as well as directing A Piece of My Heart.
To reserve a spot for the workshop, please e-mail your name, phone number, and a notification of interest at the email link below. The $10 fee can be paid at the door by cash or check made out to Aside Productions.
