State and tournament championships were captured last week in cross country and girls’ basketball.
The College Park Lady Cavaliers successfully defended its championship in the Conroe Tigerette Tournament. The No. 14 state-ranked Lady Cavaliers defeated Cy-Creek 55-51 in the finals. Megan Shafer poured in 30 points as College Park improved to 5-0 for the young season. Shafer scored 29 points in a semifinals victory over Westfield.
Shafer was named to the all-tournament team along with Lexxus Ward and Danielle Munoz.
College Park opened tournament play with victories over Cy-Springs and MacArthur. The Lady Cavaliers visit Hightower today for a 7 p.m. game before taking part in the prestigious Texas McDonald’s Invitational, Thursday through Saturday, in Pasadena.
The Woodlands finished fifth in the tournament, winning three of four games to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Lady Highlanders defeated Eisenhower for fifth place. Anna Stickland had 18 points and 13 rebounds to help lead the way. Paige Bradley contributed 15 points and both Ashley Hargraves and Sarah Seefeldt scored 10 points.
The Woodlands opened tournament play with a victory over La Marque before bowing to Bryan. The Lady Highlanders rebounded with victories over Morton Ranch and Eisenhower. They play again on Tuesday at Elsik (7:30 p.m.) before visiting Klein Oak on Friday (7 p.m.).
Cross country state champs
The Woodlands boys’ cross country team successfully defended its 5A state championship, Saturday in Round Rock. In addition, Lady Highlanders’ Sara Andrews successfully defended her individual state title as well.
The Highlanders won the boys’ team trophy with a score of 65. Klein Oak (77) was second, followed by Cedar Park (101), Lewisville Marcus (114), Flower Mound (122) and Kingwood (183) rounding out the top six in the 12-team field.
Tom Sanderson placed fourth in 15 minutes, 29.7 seconds to lead the way. Tyler Bradley (15:47.7) was 10 th while Joaquin Ortegon (15:59.8) finished 13th, Phil Schneider (16:09.6) was 18 th, and Ross Moulder (16:11.4) raced 20th. Andrew Scheffey (16:17.5) finished 22 nd and Nathan Carbajal (16:23.3) was 24th.
Andrews helped the Lady Highlanders to fourth place in the team standings. Kingwood won the team title with a score of 55. College Park was second with a score of 85. Southlake Carroll (102) was third, followed by The Woodlands (110) and Cy-Falls (112) rounding out the top five.
Margo Lyons (12:01.1) ran 19 th for The Woodlands while Katie Willard (12:05.3) was 22 nd and Colleen Murray (12:06.5) was 26 th. Samantha Thompson (12:24.1) placed 40 th while Shelby Hayes (12:31.1) and Hannah Novelli (12:49) completed the Lady Highlanders’ squad.
Katie Jensen (11:44.0) and Bree Schrader (11:46.3) ran sixth and seventh in order to pace College Park. McKenze Neal (12:00.2) ran 18 th and Claire Andrews (12:05.8) was 24 th. Emily Jensen 12:11.2) placed 30 th while Laurel Bingman (12:33.8) and Celeste Neff (13:00.8) rounded out the field for College Park.
Boys basketball opens
The 2009-10 boys’ basketball season opens this week.
The Woodlands visits Westfield tonight for a 7 p.m. game. The Highlanders’ home opener is Friday vs. Bryan at 7:30 p.m.
College Park raises the curtain on Tuesday when they entertain Cy-Woods at 7 p.m. The Cavaliers will participate in the Texas McDonald’s Invitational, Thursday through Saturday, in Pasadena.
Oak Ridge opens the season tonight at home with Klein Oak at 7 p.m.
