Atchison putting out fires for Red Sox
Atchison retired six straight batters, striking out three of those, and stranded the potential tying run on base to help the Red Sox hold off Baltimore 6-4 on Thursday and then put out another fire Monday night in Boston's 12-5 win over Tampa Bay.
The 34-year-old Atchison, a 1994 graduate of McCullough High School, has appeared in 34 games this season for the Red Sox. He has a 2-2 record with a 3.91 ERA in 50 2/3 innings pitched (36 strikeouts).
Atchison has a career 4-5 record and a 4.02 ERA over 87 games. He has pitched in 118 2/3 innings and has 106 career strikeouts.
He made his Major League debut on July 31, 2004 with the Seattle Mariners, and has also played for the San Francisco Giants.
Prior to this season, Atchison had not played in the Major Leagues in three years. He was a standout pitcher in Japan last year.
