Football: Oak Ridge dominates Baytown Sterling for first win of season
BAYTOWN -- Oak Ridge finally got its offense clicking and its defense playing tough as the War Eagles beat Baytown Sterling 48-7 Friday night at Stallworth Stadium for its first win of the season.
Running back Macklin Thomas ran for 213 yards and touchdown runs from 57 and 66 yards as Oak Ridge (1-3) put up 28 points in the first half. He also caught a 21-yard touchdown from quarterback Michael Handy, who threw for three touchdowns.
The War Eagles forced five turnovers, including four fumbles, two which were returned for touchdowns.
Handy threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Adams and then threw to Nick Gula for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0. Then Armontrie Sneed recovered a Ranger fumble and ran 30 yards for the touchdown, then Handy found Demarque LaStrappe for a 22-yard scoring play to put Oak Ridge up 28-0. Sterling (0-4) got a touchdown on the final play of the half.
After Handy found Thomas for a touchdown, Decorian Johnson got a fumble returned for a score to make it 42-7 at the end of the third quarter. Thomas capped the scoring with his 66-yard scamper.
Oak Ridge hopes this win will right their ship and gives them some much-needed confidence when they open District 14-5A play against College Park Friday night at Woodforest Stadium.
