Baseball: Three-team tie to be settled Saturday
THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Have a seat, this might take a while.
While The Woodlands High School baseball team took care of business on Friday, ending the 2012 regular season with a resounding 14-2 win over Conroe at Scotland Yard, both the College Park High School baseball team and the Oak Ridge High School baseball team claimed victories as well on Friday.
The College Park Cavaliers went to Lufkin and came away with a 7-2 win. Layton Zinsmeister and Parker Stevens delivered two hits and drove in two runs each and winning pitcher Mitchell Price contributed a pair of hits as well.
Meanwhile, the Oak Ridge War Eagles got a pitching gem from Josh Smith in a 1-0 win at home over Kingwood.
The result is a three-team tie for third place between College Park, Oak Ridge and Kingwood. All three finish the regular season with a 6-6 district record. Each team has identical 1-1 records against each other. But only two of the three teams can advance to the postseason, joining district-champions The Woodlands and runner-up Atascocita.
What to do now?
A three-team tiebreaker will be played on Saturday at Conroe High School. Two teams earn playoff berths, the other will go home.
Oak Ridge will play Kingwood at 1:30 p.m. with the winner taking on College Park at 4:30 p.m. A College Park win secures for them the third seed in the playoffs and the loser gets the fourth seed.
A College Park loss, however, gives third place to the team that beat them, and College Park would then have to play again at 7:30 p.m. against the Oak Ridge/Kingwood loser for the fourth and final playoff berth.
The Cavaliers made their way to the tiebreaker by jumping on Lufkin early with a three-run first inning and then added three more in the third inning.
That was more than enough firepower for Price, who worked the first five innings, striking out three, before Bill Ferderer and Greg Jakusik finished up.
Tyler Vaughan delivered a hit and drove in two runs for the Cavaliers, who banged out 11 hits. David Ellingson contributed two hits while both Alex Young and Kevin Barnes added one apiece.
The Woodlands made short work of Conroe, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings before and eight-run fourth-inning explosion cut the game short via the run-rule.
Alex Meize doubled, singled and drove in four runs while Hayden Harrington added two hits and drove in two runs. Carter Hope contributed a pair of hits and drove in a run while Robbie Goldschmidt ripped an RBI-triple.
Corey Laughlin (RBI) Garrett Hope and Sam Ledoux rounded out the 10-hit attack with one apiece and winning pitcher Kevin McCanna drove in a run.
McCanna worked the first four innings, striking out six, before Adam Aldred pitched the final inning. The pair combined on a four-hitter.
