Baseball: The Woodlands opens district with 7-0 win over Lufkin

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Woodlands High School baseball team opened District 14-5A play with a convincing 7-0 blanking of Lufkin on Tuesday at Scotland Yard.

Ryan Burnett fired a complete-game two-hitter, striking out nine while Highlanders’ first baseman Chris Andritsos collected four hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs. Burnett needed just 82 pitches to finish the shutout. He threw 59 of those for strikes.

The Highlanders improved to 14-0 for the season and are ranked No. 3 in the country by Baseball America.

Six players combined for The Woodlands’ 11 hits in Tuesday’s league opener. Alex Dunlap doubled twice and drove in two runs. Josh Shaw also had two hits while Carter Hope (2 RBIs), Charlie Warren (RBI) and Brandon Manger added a hit apiece.

The Oak Ridge High School baseball team also opened District 14-5A with a win. The War Eagles turned back visiting Bryan 3-1. Luken Baker went the distance, striking out 11 while scattering five hits. At the plate, Baker doubled for one of five War Eagles’ hits.

Alex Walker blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning for what proved to be the margin of victory. Walker’s bomb extended Oak Ridge’s lead to 3-0.

Gavin Grissom, Zack Maidens (RBI) and Mario Garza had a hit apiece for the War Eagles, who visit College Park for a 7 p.m. Thursday game at The Diamonds at College Park.
