Baseball: The Woodlands rolls past Conroe

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Ryan Burnett and Bret Tirlia combined on a one-hit shutout and The Woodlands High School baseball team earned a 13-0 win over Conroe on Friday at Scotland Yard.

Four homers propel Oak Ridge


Burnett went four innings, striking out five, and Tirlia pitched a perfect inning in relief, striking out one in a game shortened by the run-rule.

Charlie Warren and Blaine Gillespie each hit three-run homers to highlight a nine-run second inning that completed the scoring after the Highlanders scored four runs in the first inning. Josh Shaw delivered a first-inning two-run single to open the scoring.

Kolbi Brown also drove in two runs while Colton Wardle, Alex Dunlap, Chris Andritsos, Carter Hope and Brandon Manger all contributed in the Highlanders’ 11-hit attack.

The District 14-5A champion Highlanders (26-3, 11-1) close the 2013 regular season at 2 p.m. Saturday when they travel to meet non-district foe Clear Springs.

Oak Ridge 10 Lufkin 1

Four players hit homers Friday and Tyler Shumpert fired a complete-game one-hitter as the Oak Ridge High School baseball team recorded a 10-1 win at Lufkin.

The victory sets up a 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, showdown for second place in the District 14-5A standings with A&M Consolidated, which defeated College Park 7-5 Friday. Both teams enter the game with identical 7-4 district marks. Both teams have clinched playoffs berths. Oak Ridge hosts the key game.

Nine different War Eagles collected hits on Friday. Gavin Grissom, Joey Barrile, Alex Walker, and Brandon Navarro belted homers. Luken Baker contributed three hits, including a triple. Marshall Kasowski and Zack Maidens added two hits each.

Brice Foley and Riley McKnight rounded out the attack with one hit apiece.

Shumpert struck out nine for Oak Ridge, which improved to 15-10 for the season.

The College Park Cavaliers (15-17, 5-6) close the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, when they take on Bryan at The Diamonds at College Park. A win secures the fourth and final playoff berth from District 14-5A.
