Robertson, College Park rout Conroe
THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Junior Kyle Robertson and the College Park High School boys’ basketball team raced out to a 14-0 lead over visiting Conroe en route to a 63-34 victory over the Tigers Friday night in District 14-5A action.
Robertson scored 10 straight points in the early stages of the second half with two deuces and two 3s allowing the Cavaliers (20-5, 2-0) to stretch their lead to 40-10 effectively taking the wind out of Conroe's sails.
With College Park up 17-2 at the start of the second quarter, Conroe showed signs of life in scoring five straight points behind Stedman Bell and Victor Bernald to tighten things up a bit, 17-7.
Unfazed, the Cavaliers went on an 11-point run with the help of 3-sport athlete, Jayden Holden's six points with a minute remaining in the half.
Conroe (8-13, 0-1) head coach, John Oliverio told it like he saw it following the game.
"We did not play well tonight and that is a direct reflection on how we are practicing,” Oliverio said. “Our work ethic must improve if we hope to play with anyone in the district. We need to build on every day and be committed in practice. Until we are consistent and committed in practice, we won't compete."
College Park head coach, Clifton McNeely, elaborated on his team's play.
"Our key to playing well is being able to get back in the gym and practice after our tournament schedule over the break,” McNeely said. “We've been able to work on some things and the kids did a great job of preparing and it showed in how we are executing offensively and defensively.
“Last year, we didn't play well following the break. This year, we got our senior's together before the break to make sure that doesn't happen again."
Robertson led College Park with 20 points followed by Holden, who finished with 13, as 10 Cavaliers found the bottom of the net. Floor General, Keanu Andaya dished out nine assists and threw in six points.
For Conroe, Bell finished with eight points.
College Park takes its 13-game winning streak to College Station on Tuesday to take on A&M Consolidated. Conroe has a home tilt with Oak Ridge on the same night.
