CONROE, Texas - The Oak Ridge Lady War Eagle soccer team was in control of the district race for most of the season until they were upset last week at A&M Consolidated. That loss left the door open for The Woodlands Lady Highlanders, who came into Friday’s game with the same district record at 9-1. It’s The Woodlands and Oak Ridge for the District 14-5A championship and it’s our WOL Sports Game of the Week

The Lady Highlanders wasted no time as 4:00 into the game The Woodlands gets a throw in from the near sideline and tips it home as The Woodlands takes an early 1-0 lead.

The rest of the first-half was played to great defense by both teams and a stiff wind out of the south was blowing from the right-to-left side of the home stands.

Oak Ridge had a couple of free kick looks late in the first half, however couldn’t find the back of the net as the first half ended with The Woodlands having a 1-0 lead.

The first 20:00 of the second half played out similar to the first half with both teams being aggressive on defense and neither team getting a good set piece of offense as shots on goal were very hard to come by.

Coming down the stretch in the second half Oak Ridge couldn’t seem to get their offense moving, as the Lady War Eagles didn’t get a corner kick since 5:00 into the the first half. Credit the Lady Highlanders as the tough defense, but Oak Ridge would get one more chance with 6:00 left in the second half on a free kick but the kick sails over the top of the goal and The Woodlands takes it 1-0 as the Lady Highlanders are the 2014 District 14-5A champions.

The Woodlands finishes the district at 11-1 and will face Atascocita in the bi-district round of the playoffs next week. Oak Ridge finishes the district at 10-2 and will face Klein Oak in the bi-district round of the playoffs on Thursday, March 27th at Tomball High School.
