THE WOODLANDS, Texas - “He said to just run and jump, so I ran and jump,” said Trumaine Jefferson II, Oak Ridge High School Senior.

He is referring to a track meet held in Tomball earlier this semester when his coach asked him to long jump for the first time. Trumaine, who competed in the 200 yard dash, had never tried long jumping at practice so he gave it his best shot. The best is exactly what he achieved with a 24 feet and 7 inches jump, a jump that would change his life overnight.

“He exudes a contagious strength and spirit that motivates others to make better choices in their lives,” commented Leigha Ruffin, ORHS Counselor.

He is admired by both students and staff not only for his athletic and leadership abilities but also for his will to persevere. Though there was a time Trumaine did not have a place to call home and he was surrounded by many opportunities to make bad choices, he never loss focus to strive for better in his life. When asked what motivated him, he explained how he recalled the life lessons his mom and dad instilled in him at a young age.

“He is a tremendous athlete and a great spark for the team. He helped make other kids better athletes. That’s the legacy he will leave,” said Dennis Muehlstein, ORHS Track Coach.

If it were up to him, Trumaine would rather be behind the scene; however, it looks like the spotlight is something he may not be able to avoid. Since his first jump in Tomball Trumaine has gone on to win a few more awards, including the Class 5A Boys Long Jump State Title. His success has resulted in over 20 colleges calling to speak to him about his plans for next year. He is scheduled to visit schools such as Louisiana State University, University of Alabama, University of Oklahoma, and University of Houston. He is not expected to have to pay for college, so it is a matter of finding the right fit for him.

As for now, he is looking forward to graduating from Oak Ridge High School on May 31.

“Oak Ridge is a good place to surround yourself with good people who are on the same track as you,” stated Trumaine, “I have enjoyed all my experiences here.”

When asked what he will be doing in five years, Trumaine said he plans to be competing on the U.S. Olympic Team.

“Trumaine Jefferson has the potential to be a household name knows across the U.S. for his athletic achievements,” stated Ruffin.
