THE WOODLANDS, Texas – John Cooper School visual arts students who were awarded Gold and Silver medals in the national adjudication level of the art portion of the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, were invited, along with their instructors, Bob Mosier and Lesia Streckfuss, to attend a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 6. Their award-winning art will also be part of a National Student Exhibition that will run from June 5 through June 14 at Parsons the New School for Design in New York City.

A total of 255,000 art and writing pieces were entered in the regional competition this year and top award winners qualified to compete at the national level. Of those, three of the six gold medals awarded in the Photography category in Texas were awarded to Cooper students.

Gold medals were awarded to: Sam Dowd (’16), Grace Lawson (’17) and Mikaela Sargeant (’16). Silver medals were awarded to: Tristan Craig (’16) Photography; Joe Lindley (’14) Ceramics/Glass; A.J. Harkness (’18) Photography; and Theo Jeremiah (’16) Jewelry.

“We are very proud to have these students representing the visual arts department this year,” said Mosier, who is Cooper’s Visual Arts Department Chair. “Particularly worthy of note this year is that from students from all 50 states, plus 11 countries, there were only three Gold national medals and 9 Silver given to students in Jewelry and of those, one was awarded to a Cooper student. Equally noteworthy is that there was only one national medal in Photography given to an eighth grade student in Texas this year, and that was A.J. We are very much looking forward to the opportunity to attend the ceremony in New York with art students from around the country and world.”
