KATY, Texas — The Oak Ridge High School football team started their season with a tough loss to Morton Ranch who went 4-6 overall and 3-4 district last year.

The War Eagles immediately started off strong and were quick to put the first points on the board, but Morton Ranch came back the next play and tied the game. The Mavericks made two more touchdowns during the first half, bringing the halftime score to 21-7.

Although the Mavericks made some interceptions during the second half, Oak Ridge’s defense pulled through with some big plays by outside linebacker Grant Stuard, including a fumble recovery late in the third quarter.

“Grant is a leader for us beside the ball,” Head Coach Derek Rush said. “He’s the only returning linebacker from last year. He made plays today, and he did a good job as far as his assignments, and that’s to be expected.”

The War Eagles made another touchdown early in the fourth quarter but were unable to harness a victory against Morton Ranch.

“I’m proud of the kids, and they could have easily given up but they didn’t,” Rush said. “We’ll learn from our mistakes and get better and show up next week."

Oak Ridge will face Aldine High School on Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. at Woodforest Stadium.
