What started off as a slow game, the War Eagles scored a field goal in the first quarter and maintained a small but steady lead over Klein Forest. By the end of the half, Oak Ridge was ahead 10-0 with the defense holding off their formerly undefeated opponent.

“Klein Forest did a good job as far as pitching their inside guys and taking away our inside running game,” Head Coach Dereck Rush said. “We’ve got to do a better job of adjusting those types of things as far as getting the ball through, but overall it was a team effort. Defense played well. Offense played well. We can build from this and get better.”

At the start of the third quarter, the War Eagles’ offense changed their conservative pace and sped up their game with the defense supporting them the whole way through.

“Coach Abercrombie is doing a great job coaching [Klein Forest] and got some speed on the football field, and their offensive line is huge,” Rush said. “Our guys came out focused, and our defense did an awesome job tonight. The offense in the second half did a great job as well.”

Leading the defense was junior outside linebacker Grant Stuard who maintained high energy throughout the game.

“Grant Stuard is one of our leaders. He’s a guy whose motor never stops, and he does a great job on the field as being a leader and off the field as well,” Rush said. “Right now our kids are playing well, and we’re getting better every game. We are improving, and we’ve got one more game before we get ready for district, so that’s where we want to be right now.”

The Oak Ridge War Eagles will play at Deer Park Friday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. This will conclude their pre-district matches.
