The Highlanders opened their season with a loss Saturday to Smithson Valley at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The No. 7-ranked Highlanders fell to No. 9 Smithson Valley 17-3.

On their opening possession the Highlanders drove 72 yards in 12 plays, leading to a 24-yard field goal from Derek Depasquale. The field goal gave the Highlanders a 3-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Highlanders that initial drive would provide their only points for the day. Although, tailback Tracy Milo provided a strong effort (20 carries for 92 yards), the Highlander offense struggled much of the afternoon. The Smithson Valley Rangers capatilized on special teams mistakes and kept the Highlanders' offense grounded.Next Saturday the Highlanders will look to rebound from the tough loss when they host Katy at Moorhead stadium at 7:30 p.m.
