The Great New Face of Luby's

I am a big fan of Luby's due to the freedom of menu choice for every family member. I can hardly believe that I have been eating at Luby's for over 12 years, usually the location at 922 Lake Front Circle.

Luby's has been a part of Texas culture for 60 years, and they've recently come under influence of the Pappa's family. I knew that once this happened we could only expect positive changes. I was right. The most notable and visible changes involve menu improvements. On a complementary note, the heat lamps have been updated with the latest look, which gives a very modern touch. The food display has improved as well, with large white platters that make any food look picture perfect.

Another notable change is the restroom makeover, which has been a long time coming. I, for one, really like all the changes and hope to see more. With Pappas behind this great place, it will certainly blossom.

Another (hopefully pending) improvement will be getting rid of the smoking section. I often find that nonsmokers are forced to double up at tables when there are not enough seats. While all the non-smokers pack the right side of the restaurant, the smoking section is empty but for the one woman dragging on a cigarette while eating mash potatoes. What a waste of tables! This is a family restaurant. Let's think of the young children and the effects of second hand smoke. I'm confident that Pappas will get around to doing this in keeping with the family themed atmosphere.

Luby's still has the "kids eat free" nights on Wednesday and Saturday each week. It's fun, and with an adult purchase, a Childs plate is free. There are a group of guys that have been taking care of me for years that I have to mention. The first up is Mark, who has been a regular face at this location for years. He makes sure I have plenty of tea. My check out man is Luke, who keeps the line moving with his proficient cash register keyboard skills. The extra hand to carry trays to the table is Gordon: all the kids love him. He hands out balloons and crayons. They seem to be on track with great managers too. The food and people working at Luby's are great. The smoking and seating problems need to be fixed.

If it weren't for the smoking section related seating inconvenience, I'd give this legendary local family dining establishment five acorns. But all things considered, I can only give them three squirrel nuts.
