Deerwood's annual fundraiser is May 20

CONROE, Texas –– The Deerwood Community will hold its annual fundraising festival to support the work of its community center on Sunday, May 20.

The event is set for noon – 5 p.m.; Deerwood Community Center is located at 3859 West Forest Road in Conroe (off Crockett- Martin Road and Highline Road). On hand will be Conroe's own Chikawa Aztec Dance troupe, a salsa-making contest, children's activities, face painting and food.

Sen. Tommy Williams has dedicated a Texas flag from the state capitol to the community center in recognition of its work to provide families with a brighter future. Dr. Wally Wilkerson will do the honor of raising the flag and will be recognized for his life-long commitment to serving his community, and raising hope for all children of Montgomery County.

The Deerwood Familia Project began three years ago with the collaborative efforts of several local resource professionals. The Deerwood Community is a small, but growing community, located 10 miles east of Conroe with more than 350 families residing there.

The community consists of many first and second generation Americans working to provide their families with a strong future. Learning to connect and navigate community systems, and tapping the many talents and skills of its residents became the focal point of the project.

“Over the past three years, Deerwood volunteers have worked hard to create priority areas, develop committees and engage different resources that are slowly building internal leadership and opportunity,” said Maria Baños Jordan, executive director of TLLR. “The strong sense of community is evident in the ongoing volunteer efforts of residents, in spite of the economic strains of a weak economy that has required many parents to work two or more jobs.”
