THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- There are many options for getting a perfect smile in this day and age. It is commonly known that advances in orthodontics have improved traditional braces with the use of heat-activated wires and self-ligating braces, such as the state-of-the-art Damon System. For those who want a more discrete process, Invisalign has become the go-to appliance. One technologically advanced system which you may of not have heard of is SureSmile. Invented in the early 2000’s by Texas-based Orametrix, SureSmile was adopted by local orthodontist Dr. Todd Hughes in 2009. “It is the most advanced way to efficiently treat an orthodontic case,” Dr. Hughes said.

So how is this system different from traditional braces? “The difference is in the wire. The wire is custom fit with a computerized program,” Dr. Hughes said. The SureSmile system uses 3-D imaging and virtual simulations of the patients’ mouth unlike traditional 2-D images. From these 3-D images the orthodontist is able to see the complete mouth from multiple angles. This allows the orthodontist to predict and navigate the best way to move the teeth, simulating exactly where the teeth need to be. With the SureSmile system the orthodontist is truly able to begin treatment with the end result in mind.

After creating the virtual product, an advanced robotic machine bends the arch wire with extreme precision to fit each patient’s needs as prescribed by their doctor. Because of the 3-D imaging, virtual simulations and robotically bent wires “each tooth moves more directly to the prescribed position.” This is why using SureSmile can take about 30% less time in treatment than traditional braces.

A few things to keep in mind:

SureSmile is used on patients that have their permanent teeth in place.

“The SureSmile system does not move your teeth any faster than conventional braces, however it’s the SureSmile technology of the robot that bends the wires so accurately that we move all the teeth where they need to go…the first time.” Dr. Hughes said. Due to this efficiency, there are less wire changes and adjustments resulting in fewer visits to the orthodontist.

There are only a few practitioners in the Houston area offering this advanced technology; one of them is Dr. Hughes. He has treated close to 1000 patients using SureSmile.

With the SureSmile system a patient can expect decreased time in orthodontic treatment, fewer in office appointments and the ability to truly begin orthodontic treatment with the end result in mind….a beautiful and functional smile.
