THE WOODLANDS, Texas – It wasn’t as easy as the score indicates, but The Woodlands High School volleyball team remained undefeated for the 2013 season with a 3-0 sweep of No. 15 state-ranked A&M Consolidated at home Friday.

The Lady Highlanders (33-0, 8-0), ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in the nation, were forced to earn a 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 victory over the Lady Tigers (28-10, 5-3). But earn it they did. Kelly Quinn came up with 20 digs for the match and in doing so recorded her 2,000th career dig. Quinn is headed to LSU to continue her playing days at the collegiate level.

Courtney Eckenrode dished out 35 assists, setting up Courtney Quinn and Rachel Reed, who led the Lady Highlanders at the net with 13 and nine kills respectively.

“To win and win in 3 is big for us,” The Woodlands coach Leslie Madison said, who added that there is no room for complacency on this team. “If they really want to accomplish their overall goal of winning it all, then we can get better.

“We’re not perfect. There are things that we need to work on. So they just need to be willing to recognize that and come to practice and keep working hard and not think we’re going to get there just because we’re doing great right now.”

That isn’t always easy to do, Madison said. “It is difficult but we’re trying to keep practices intense and competitive. The good thing is, we have such a good group 1 through 12 that when we scrimmage it’s good competition on both sides.”

The Lady Highlanders visit Lufkin for a 6 p.m. Tuesday match.
