College Park falls to Lufkin
SHENANDOAH, Texas - Steven Sowell rushed for 152 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown to lead the Lufkin Panthers to a 34-14 win over the College Park Cavaliers at Woodforest Bank Stadium Friday night.
“Our kids played hard, but we made some mistakes that we don’t typically make,” said Cavalier Head Coach Richard Carson. “We started off bad with a bad snap, we turned one loose deep that we shouldn’t of, we gave up a fake punt, our guys played their guts out, but I just want us to play smarter."
Lufkin (3-5, 2-2) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter when Sowell ran for a 48-yard touchdown to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 8:47 left in the quarter. The Panthers then executed a fake punt on a fourth-and-2, and turned it into a 58-yard touchdown run by Josh Tolbert giving Lufkin a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
College Park (4-4, 1-3) quickly responded, scoring after a sustained drive into the red zone when Senior quarterback Colton Farmer connected with Senior tight end Jayden Holden on a 14-yard touchdown reception. The score cut the Lufkin lead to 14-7 with 7:04 left in the second quarter.
Lufkin had a 36-yard field goal by Timmy Martinez before the half, capping off an eight play drive that lasted 3:19 to give the Panthers a 17-7 halftime lead.
The Panthers picked up where they left off in the second half, as Trey Cumbie connected with Demarrea Houston on a 31-yard touchdown pass. The score extended the Panthers lead to 24-7 with 9:44 left in the third quarter.
The Cavaliers would not go away quietly, going on what may be their best drive of the season in 18 plays, 88 yards in 5:27, capped off by an 11-yard Nick Black touchdown run to pull the Cavaliers within 24-14 with 3:42 left.
The game’s momentum shifted back to Lufkin when the Cavaliers could not recover a Panther fumble at the Lufkin 21-yard line. Lufkin continued an eventual 72-yard drive that saw over 5:30 come off the clock before a 25-yard Timmy Martinez field goal gave Lufkin a 27-14 lead with 3:42 left in the game.
Lufkin’s final touchdown came on a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown by Jamarion Houston with 3:13 left in the game.
The Cavaliers will return to Woodforest Bank Stadium next Friday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m., as the visitor against The Woodlands (6-2, 4-0).
