THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The athletic department at The John Cooper School held a signing ceremony, Feb. 5, to recognize Sonia Johnson who will be playing Division I soccer for DePaul University in Chicago in the fall. Faculty, coaches, teammates and family gathered to honor the student athlete at the signing.

“I couldn't be happier or prouder of Sonia playing Division 1 college soccer at DePaul University,” said Amber Clevenger, head soccer coach for Cooper. “Sonia is an amazingly talented soccer player as well as an excellent athlete, and I look forward to watching her play in her new colors.”

Johnson has competed at Cooper for six years.

Also present to honor Johnson was Stuart Fitzsimons, her Texas Rush soccer coach. Johnson was named Cooper’s 2013 Female Athlete of the Year for her athletic skills and leadership on both the soccer field and on the track and field team. She has earned all conference honors for soccer each year since her freshman year.

An honor student, Johnson is a member of the Student Government Association, the Student Diversity Committee and the Student-2-Student Ambassador Committee at Cooper. Outside school, Johnson plays Rush soccer and is active in the National Charity League: Bluebonnet Chapter and Jack and Jill of America, Inc.

Johnson plans to study psychology at DePaul University in the fall.
