LMC learns about education in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2014 recently got a look into education in the county at their Education Session, held at Lone Star College – Conroe Center and The Woodlands Emergency Training Center. The session was sponsored by McKesson, the Greater Magnolia Chamber of Commerce and Vic’s Precision Automotive.

Session Director Dr. Lisa Meeks, of Conroe ISD, planned a full day for the class, complete with insightful panels of educators from throughout the county as well as a tour of Lone Star College – Conroe Center and a look into training by The Woodlands Fire Department and the Lone Star College – Montgomery Fire Science Program.

The day began with an informative Superintendents Panel featuring superintendents from the six Montgomery County school districts including Dr. Don Stockton, Conroe ISD; Dr. Todd Stephens, Magnolia ISD; Dr. Beau Rees, Montgomery ISD; Dr. Genese Bell, Splendora ISD; Kenn Franklin, New Caney ISD and Tim Harkrider, Willis ISD.

The Superintendents Panel was followed by a tour of the Lone Star College – Conroe Center and a Higher Education Panel that included Dr. Dana Gibson, president of Sam Houston State University and Dr. Austin Lane, president of Lone Star College – Montgomery.

After lunch, the class then traveled to The Woodlands Emergency Training Center, where they had the chance to see cadets in training and to tour the training facility with The Woodlands Fire Department Training Chief Rick Windham.

A Private School Panel followed, which featured Dr. Linda Ellis, Center for Teaching and Learning; Linda Wilmoth, The Woodlands Methodist School; Audra May, Legacy Preparatory Christian Academy; Deb Brown, Sacred Heart Catholic School; and Julie Ambler, The Woodlands Christian Academy. William Kelly, Coordinator of Assessment and Evaluation for Conroe ISD then gave the class a look into STAAR testing.

The day concluded with a Nonprofit Board Fair & Meet & Greet in partnership with Montgomery County United Way.

Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to developing and enhancing current and future leaders of Montgomery County. The goal of the program is to educate and inform candidates about major community issues, while inspiring and motivating individuals to exercise their leadership skills to benefit the community.

LMC is a joint project of the Greater Conroe/Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce and The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce. The Greater Magnolia Chamber of Commerce, the Community Chamber of East Montgomery County and the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber are also participating Chambers in the LMC program. Participants are chosen by application process in June of each year.
