THE WOODLANDS, Texas - The central nervous system (CNS) is essential to everyday life. Formed by the brain and spinal cord, the CNS is involved with talking, walking, emotion, thoughts and memory. However, when complications and injuries occur to the brain and spinal cord, proper treatment is vital to a smooth recovery. Dr. Imran Fayaz of The Brain & Spine Institute of North Houston specializes in minimally invasive brain and spine surgery, as well as non-surgical treatments for the neck, back and spine. Dr. Fayaz is not only dedicated to his work, but he cares deeply for every single one of his patients. Brain and spine conditions and injuries can be very risky as well as challenging to deal with, and the staff at The Brain & Spine Institute of North Houston do everything they can to make patients and their families feel at ease while seeking medical attention.

Born into a family of physicians, Dr. Fayaz has always had an interest in medicine and helping others. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto, and completed residency training at the university’s Neurosurgical Training Program.

“I am a very mechanically-minded guy. Neurosurgery had everything for me, from cranial microsurgery to spinal instrumentation, with great technological strides being made on all fronts,” said Dr. Fayaz. “When I started medical school in 1986, the MRI machine was just coming into the medical realm. The field is constantly growing, evolving, and improving."

Although the problems one faces as a Neurosurgeon are complicated, their management can be immensely gratifying. In it, there seems to be an equal balance and involvement of both the mind and the spirit.

"After many years in practice, I feel that I am witnessing a revolution in the way problems afflicting the nervous system are being diagnosed and treated,” said Dr. Fayaz.

Dr. Fayaz has practiced neurosurgery for over 15 years, and in 2009, he opened The Brain & Spine Institute of North Houston, located at 1111 Medical Plaza Drive, Suite 200.

With their facility offering the latest medical technologies, Dr. Fayaz and his team of healthcare professionals diagnose and treat four main problems:

- Brain masses, tumors and infections

- Brain bleeds and traumatic injury

- Neck, back and spine pain

- Nerve entrapments

A special feature that can be helpful for anyone experiencing pain or discomfort to the brain or spine is the medical blog on the facility’s website. From information regarding headaches and concussions to back pain and physical fitness, the blog is complete with helpful tips about many different topics.

Due to the great increase of medical technology in just the past decade, surgery is much less invasive than what it used to be. Medical problems can be better evaluated, surgery is safer, and better tools and techniques are now used to operate.

Some procedures that Dr. Fayaz performs can be done as outpatient surgery, causing less collateral damage, less pain and faster healing. Patients can undergo an operation without having to put their life on hold for several days. If a patient is required to have surgery, Dr. Fayaz is affiliated with various hospitals in the North Houston area. However, in some instances, surgery isn’t even necessary at all.

“Every patient needs a good diagnosis, but they don’t always need surgery,” said Dr. Fayaz. “I find that patients I treat have profound problems. When I’m able to reverse that, it gives them happiness. These situations impact people.”

Dr. Fayaz and his staff work hard to help their patients return to a normal life after experiencing complications or injuries to the brain and spine. The Brain & Spine Institute of North Houston, with the use of the latest medical technology, treats patients with the utmost care so that they can heal faster and return to a life of normalcy.

“At the end of the day, you want to do something you enjoy," said Dr. Fayaz. I’m not just helping patients, but families as well. That, to me, is a source of immense satisfaction. It is something I have always loved. This is my life’s calling.”
